The Retro Game Series

In this section we have a series of MSDos games ranging from simple simulation to full role-playing games. Many of these videos do not contain narration, but are simply just videos of the games being played.

Darklands

Created by Microprose in 1992, Darklands is a dark-fantasy that takes place in 1500s Germany. In the long-run, there are bandits, robber knights, witches, dwarves, kobolds, dragons, and, ultimately, a fight to save the world from complete destruction. Gameplay uses alchemy, saints, straight-out battling, and a unique battle system.

SpellCraft: Aspects of Valor

Created in 1992 as the only game by the company Asciiware, SpellCraft is an adventure game where you play Robert, an unlikely hero drawn into the world of magic and treachery. You have to learn how to use your sword, your magic, and your instincts, because without all three, Robert will never survive.

The Legend of Kyrandia Series

Consisting of three games, Book One, Book Two, and Book Three, the Legend of Kyrandia is a point and click adventure by Westwood Studios that came out in 1992, 1993, and 1994 respectfully. The first game puts Brandon, the unknowing prince of the land, in control. The second puts Zanthia, an alchemist, in control of saving the land as it mysteriously begins disappearing. The final installment puts Malcolm, the antagonist of the first game, in command as he slowly redeems himself.

The Lost Vikings

The Lost Vikings is a classic platformer that puts the player in charge of three different characters instead of just one. However, each character is all on the screen at the same time, and the user must switch back and forth between them to get through increasingly difficult levels that take place on various worlds. The goal, of course, is just to get the Vikings home, no matter what it takes.

The Savage Empire

Created by Origin in 1990, The Savage Empire takes the Avatar to the world of Eodon. We won't lie, this game contains a lot of inspiration for The Case Files of Jake Malone. In fact, many of the characters from our books are named for, and designed after, the ones from this game.

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans

The RTS (real-time strategy) game that brought Azeroth to the homes of countless gamers. Created by Blizzard Entertainment in 1994, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans allowed players the opportunity to play on either side, good or evil, which for many was a first.

The World of Xeen

Released as two games in 1992 (Clouds of Xeen) and 1993 (Darkside of Xeen), The World of Xeen combines both games into a single playable story with a third mission. Interestingly, the developers, New World Computing, designed Xeen around this idea, and had components in Darkside that would only activate if the owner also had a save file for Clouds. While the game had a few faults (like the fact that enemies never respawn, and so there is a limited amount of possible experience, an optional boss that is so powerful, almost no one ever defeats it, or a secret city that holds every spell in the entire game, and so once you find it you can return as a level 1 character), The World of Xeen is a classic that still holds up.
